Malaysia Launches Kenyir Solar and Hydrogen Projects to Boost Regional Connectivity

Details: On July 12, 2025, Malaysia launched two key projects at Kenyir: the Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and the Green Hydrogen Hub. The HHFS, a joint venture between TNB Genco Sdn Bhd and Terengganu Inc, is part of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). It includes a 100 kW pilot at Kenyir Dam, using 220 solar panels over 1,085 sqm, with potential to scale up to 2,200 MW across 36,900 hectares of Tasik Kenyir. The Green Hydrogen Hub, a collaboration between Petronas and TNB, aligns with the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR), aiming to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the green hydrogen value chain. Both projects are linked to the ASEAN Power Grid, starting with an undersea cable from Vietnam to Kota Bharu, enhancing regional energy connectivity and attracting investors.

Key Takeaway: Malaysia's investment in solar and hydrogen projects demonstrates its ambition to become a key player in Southeast Asia's green energy transition and attract international investors.
