Nigeria’s Green Ammonia Target by 2060

Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce over 4 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2060, as part of its green hydrogen strategy, announced during the Nigeria for Hydrogen (Nigeria4H2) Stakeholders’ Workshop on July 19, 2025, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Tope Fasua, highlighted the initiative’s potential to boost fertilizer production and transition to clean energy. The strategy includes:

  • Attracting $5 billion in private investment by 2035.
  • Creating 500,000 new jobs and generating $10 billion in annual hydrogen export revenue by 2035.
  • Implementing a National Hydrogen Policy and Strategy, phased from 2026 to 2028, with projects like a 50 MW green hydrogen plant at Kano Solar Park, hybrid rural microgrids, and carbon capture initiatives.
  • Proposing a National Hydrogen Council, chaired by the Vice President, with subcommittees on domestic applications and exports.
  • Aiming to reduce industrial CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, with recommendations for a national green hydrogen strategy, renewable infrastructure investment, domestic electrolyser production, and integration into fertilizer policy.

This development positions Nigeria as an emerging player in the green hydrogen domain, with significant economic and environmental implications. The long-term timeline introduces some uncertainty, but the plan is supported by partnerships with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use, Nigerian universities, and the German Government.
