Hygenco Commissions Maharashtra’s First Green Hydrogen Plant for Optical Fibre Production

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra - Sterlite Technologies Ltd. (STL), a global leader in optical and digital solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing by commissioning Maharashtra's first green hydrogen and green oxygen production facility for optical fiber manufacturing. This groundbreaking initiative, in collaboration with Hygenco, positions STL as one of the world's first optical fiber manufacturers to deploy 100% green hydrogen in its production processes.

The new facility will supply green hydrogen and oxygen to STL's glass preform plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Hydrogen and oxygen are crucial in the optical fiber manufacturing process, serving as fuel in blast furnaces to convert silica particles into glass. By transitioning to green hydrogen, generated entirely from renewable energy through electrolysis, STL aims to reduce its annual carbon emissions by approximately 30%. This move is a major step towards the company's ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030.

Hygenco will build, own, and operate the green hydrogen plant under a long-term 20-year offtake agreement, ensuring a reliable and commercially viable supply of green gases to STL. This partnership not only highlights a commitment to sustainability but also sets a new global standard for decarbonization within the optical fiber industry.

Rahul Puri, CEO of Optical Networking Business at STL, emphasized that this collaboration with Hygenco exemplifies STL's dedication to sustainability and operational excellence, leading the way in integrating green hydrogen into large-scale manufacturing. Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies, also noted the transformative potential of green hydrogen in India's sustainability journey, enabling STL to usher in a new era of green manufacturing for the global optical fiber industry.

STL's semiconductor-grade Glass Preform manufacturing facility is an Industry 4.0-enabled plant, incorporating advanced autonomous energy management systems, real-time monitoring, and automated control technologies to enhance safety and operational efficiency. This project is a pivotal step for India's green manufacturing ambitions, demonstrating a scalable model for industrial decarbonization that other industries worldwide can emulate.
